Meet Patrick Turnbull, a student producer for the graduation short film @eyeinthesky.film. He talks about the producing process and his aspirations.

According to the film’s official page, “Eye in the Sky” is a film about two department heads, a wide eyed receptionist, and a lowly intern who must respond to an alien signal in a government black-site.

So who came up with the idea?

“It was actually our writer and director James Leonard who came up with this idea. Early on, we had a big spreadsheet with all our different script ideas on. In the end we decided to go with Eye in the Sky.”

So what made you want to produce this?

“I’m really passionate about producing films especially at this level where the restrictions are tighter which means I need to be on the ball with my problem solving and creative thinking.”

And what sort of duties does that entail?

“Well, as producer I’ve been kind of overseeing all aspects of the production. The real talent is with the rest of the team I’m more of a facilitator spurring them along keeping them in check.”

In Patrick’s opinion, the best resource for a producer is people. “Excel is a big help and being able to create spreadsheets is essential in my role. The most important resource however is people. Collaboration is everything in filmmaking and I feel incredibly privileged to be working alongside some incredible people.”

And what is the long term plan?

“I would really love to work as a 1st AD, after doing it on projects in and out of university, I’ve really enjoyed it. I would say my overall ambition is probably to be able to get to a point where I can direct/produce my own projects.
